Programme Structure

The MSc Mathematics with Data Science programme offers an innovative and interdisciplinary education in advanced mathematics and data science principles. This unique combination is designed to provide a systematic understanding of core mathematical concepts and modern data science techniques, equipping you with the theoretical knowledge, analytical expertise, and practical skills required to tackle complex real-world problems across a broad range of industries, academia, and cutting-edge research. The programme prepares you for further study or high-level professional roles. 
The programme emphasises a strong foundation in advanced mathematics and its practical applications, combined with data science methodologies for extracting insights from complex data. You will develop strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills, along with advanced mathematical modelling capabilities. These will be complemented by training in data science tools and techniques, ensuring you acquire technical expertise highly valued by employers. The flexible curriculum allows you to tailor your learning by selecting modules that emphasise mathematical theory, problem-solving techniques, or algorithmic approaches directly relevant to the challenges of the modern world. You will choose two data science-focused modules, enabling you to align your studies with your specific interests and career goals while maintaining the programme’s robust mathematical and computational core.  
The programme is undertaken full time for a duration of twelve months and comprises eight taught modules over two teaching terms, followed by an extended research project under the supervision of a member of our specialist academic staff in either an industry inspired or academic context. The project is a key element of the programme and will enable you to apply advanced mathematical methods and data science techniques to real-world problems, develop research expertise, and refine your problem-solving and communication skills.

PSMADS - Mathematics with Data Science

The programme mainly covers a combination of topics of advanced mathematics and Data Science, with the focus on those aspects relevant to addressing real-world applications. You will study the fundamental concepts and the necessary analytical techniques and computational methods in a range of mathematical and Data Science subjects, and you will be taught how these can be applied in a research context.

For the taught component of the MSc, you will study a number of modules that will introduce you to core aspects of modern advanced mathematics. Most modules will use a combination of lectures and problem classes. The lectures provide the principal introduction to the new material. They are of 50 minutes duration. The lectures are supported through tutorials and computer labs where appropriate. Details can be found in the individual module specifications. The tutorials provide opportunities for you to work on selected problems and exercises provided by the lecturer. This also provides an additional opportunity for staff to help you with questions arising from the lectures. Laboratories give you the opportunity to practice computational techniques, and to seek practical help from a tutor.  
Typically, each module has 20-30 hours of lectures and, overall, the taught elements of the programme require around 12-15 contact hours per week. In addition, there will be the need for independent study. It is expected that this time will be spent working on background reading, revision of notes, work on tutorial problems, coursework, and individual work on the extended research project. 
You will work on a dissertation on a selected topic under the supervision of a lecturer. The dissertation is a research-based document that focuses on exploring a specific research question or hypothesis in depth, often contributing original findings or perspectives to a field of study. The work on the dissertation will involve conducting a literature review, defining the research problem, critically assessing the topic, and applying appropriate research methodologies. You will present your results in both a written dissertation and an oral presentation.  
The dissertation is a substantial component of your MSc, accounting for one-third of the whole course requirements. Most of the work will be carried out during the summer, following the examination period, though you are encouraged to begin planning and preliminary research earlier. 
Completing a dissertation develops highly sought-after employability skills, including research and analytical skills, such as critical evaluation and data analysis, as well as project management abilities like planning, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines. It fosters problem-solving through innovative approaches, enhances communication skills through structured writing and presentations, and promotes independent work and initiative, demonstrating self-motivation and discipline. Technical expertise in tools and methodologies, critical thinking, and attention to detail are also refined, alongside resilience and adaptability to overcome challenges. These transferable skills prepare graduates for complex roles in research, consulting, data analysis, project management, and more, showcasing their ability to handle and deliver high-quality, independent work.
