The module extends your expected prior understanding of structural analysis to cover the principles of design of structural systems, or buildings, and the members, or elements, which form them.
<ul><li>Structural systems:   Structural scheme development and selection to ensure stability and satisfactory performance of commercial, industrial and tall buildings. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Steel elements using commercially available hot rolled steel sections:  The design of compression members, beams and beam-columns will be covered before along with the structural analysis requirements and the design of fully rigid, semi-rigid and simple bolted connections along with some relevant welded connection requirements. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Steel concrete composite elements:  Starting with the composite beam, shear connector and composite floor design, the module will then proceed with the design principles for composite columns, including encased stanchions and concrete filled steel tubes.  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Steel plate girders:  The key aspects for the efficient design of stiffened plate structures includes  local plate buckling, section classification, orthotropic plate panels and the design of plate girders for shear. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Light gauge construction:  Typical light gauge construction includes that of cladding and roofing for industrial buildings or areas of lower magnitude loads.  The module covers the key design issues of the lightweight cold formed steel sections, normally only a few millimetres thick, as typically used. </li></ul>
The module does not specifically cover the methods of structural analysis (e.g. beam theory, moment distribution, flexibility method or finite element analysis) used to determine the magnitude of forces acting upon the structures and it is assumed that you already have this knowledge or that it is part of another module on the programme of study.  It does, however, highlight which methods are appropriate for the relevant areas of the design process.

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. The programme of lectures constitutes the main taught component. You will learn about theoretical concepts and practical examples. 
In addition, you will receive guidance about design in tutorial sessions for your design projects. The brief for the design projects relates to a typical Part 3 examination of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
Weekly tutorial guidance is offered throughout the project to enable valid structural schemes to be chosen at the conceptual design stage as well as during detailed design.  Much of the detailed design is carried out in non-timetabled sessions.

Design of Steel and Composite Structures

Undertake the design of a complete 3D steel or composite structural system.
