The first half of the module surveys the so-called “textbook” approaches to GPE, while the second half examines contemporary theories at the cutting edge of the field.

In this module you will be introduced to three key paradigms of thinking about capitalism. We will explore these paradigm’s and their lessons through a combination of Lectures and small group learning activities in Seminars. You will be encouraged to actively contribute to the learning environment through small individual and/or group presentations and through group discussions. The main learning and teaching resources will be posted on the Moodle page of the course. 
 
Self-directed learning is an important component of the course. You will be encouraged under the supervision of the lecturer to go beyond the readings discussed in class to explore the literature more in depth. This activity will provide the basis for the writing of short research-based papers and class presentations.

Theories of Global Political Economy

Formulate claims which encompass systemic knowledge and awareness of different schools of thought in global political economy.

Knowledge

Identify and analyse historical and socio-political mechanisms that shape theories and concepts.

Skills

Identify and appraise the key factors that differentiate between the key traditions of thought studied in the module.   

Critically compare the different theoretical traditions surveyed in the course.    

Analyse the nature of capitalism as a complex habitat of socio-political relationships.  

Values and attitudes

Produce written materials that indicate in a precise and honest manner what is your own work and what is attributable to others. 

Relate historical examples and contemporary issues to theories of global political economy.  

Appreciate the political, historical and ideational differences between scholarly traditions in mainstream and heterodox political economics. 

Assess the role, purpose and power of key agents and structures within the global political economy.
