This module will offer you the opportunity to critically  evaluate the knowledge and skills required to care for critically ill cardiothoracic patients. A dynamic approach to clinical effectiveness in relation to contemporary cardiothoracic critical care management is required. Therefore, session content may be subject to change as new and important concerns arise.

This module is a standalone module, but you must meet the entry requirements for BSc study. You should have also completed a post- registration specialist Intensive Care programme (or equivalent) at level 6 or level 7.
To undertake this module, you need to be currently working in a level 3 critical care setting which cares for patients requiring cardiothoracic critical care management.

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. NM3948 - Cardiothoracic Critical Care – Level 6

The variety of teaching and learning methods used in this module will provide a safe environment for you to explore your own knowledge base. Participation in a range of activities and online learning through City, University of London virtually learning environment (VLE) – Moodle will equip you with the essential knowledge base which you can apply to practice.
 
Classroom facilitated learning will take place at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, this will be complemented by your individual and online learning. We will encourage you to prepare for your sessions through a variety of methods such as completing online materials, which will be required to maximise your learning experience and achievements. You will be directed to key literature and recent research so that you develop an awareness of contemporary thinking in this field of practice.
 
This 15-credit module will have a total of 150 hours student learning and will be delivered at HE Level 6. The face-to-face contact time will provide an exploration of key principles and information on the subject area with guidance of areas you can explore further. We will encourage you to share experiences and contribute to the module by actively engaging within the class setting in group work, case studies and presentations.
 
The student directed hours are for you to follow up sessions with reading and undertake other activities that will enable you to develop your assessment and learning. You will be directed to relevant materials, key literature, and recent research to develop an awareness of contemporary thinking. You will have the opportunity to undertake formative assessment activities (presentations, clinical skills, group discussions, discussion forums) which will help you complete your assessment and build confidence to enable you to plan your future learning. Opportunities for feedback will include peer feedback, lecturer feedback and completion of on-line activities.

Cardiothoracic Critical Care – Level 6

Critically discuss, interpret, and evaluate complex patient data, practice guidelines, and evidence-based practice and use it to plan, implement and evaluate nursing care.

Explore and apply care interventions which are reflective of current research and critically discuss how practice can be developed according to the current research/ evidence.

Knowledge

Demonstrate and initiate the technical and practical skills to ensure the safe and effective use of advanced cardiothoracic devices required to care for the critically ill patient safely.

Explore psychosocial requirements, including end of life needs, of the patients and their families based on ethical principles.

Explore the psychological, physiological, and sociological impact of critical illness on patients and their families.

Values and attitudes

Develop skills to enhance professional practice, including critical analysis, creative thinking, synthesis, decision making and communication skills.

Discuss leadership skills and personal resilience to manage complex clinical.

Explore your profession practice in your understanding of ethical and end of life issues when caring for these patients.

Discuss physiological and pathophysiological concepts relevant to cardiothoracic critical care and be able to critically analyse and apply them to practice.
