Topics covered in this module include: 
<ul><li>The importance of stories for individual, group, and cultural identity. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Some ways of analysing stories, including approaches from Narrative Psychology. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Differences in storytelling and their impact on identity, including in the contexts of Alzheimer’s Disease and Schizophrenia. </li></ul>
<ul><li>The psychology behind what makes a good story, including why some stories spread. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Using stories to change behaviour, including in health, politics, and the workplace. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Stories as explanations, and stories as tools for change. </li></ul>

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. Lectures will support knowledge and understanding of key content, as well as including formative assessments to support and evaluate one’s own learning progress. Consolidation of knowledge, Skills and Values will be developed through seminar activities, which also will involve applying some of the ideas to practice assessment questions. 
You will also have self-directed study time allocated to this module. You will be encouraged and supported by your tutor to read widely and in depth around particular topics and to critically share your experience with others in class. These hours also enable you to review additional materials added to Moodle and to help with your assessment preparation and completion.

The Psychology of Stories

Analyse common story structures and elements, and appraise disfluency in story-telling in a range of circumstances. 

Knowledge

Critically assess the use of stories as problem-solving tools.

Apply tools from psychology to craft effective stories for opinion change.

Skills

Critically analyse stories using a variety of techniques, including those of Labov and Gee.

Assess constraints on story-telling, including master narratives, counter-narratives, and their role in ‘de-storying’.

Critically discuss the importance of stories across cultures, social groups.
