This module will cover the more basic fundamental processes in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuropsychology. You will engage in some with the following topics:  
<ul><li>Perception including sensory integration, action perception, interoception and embodied cognition  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Attention, its limits and disorders of attention  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Executive function  </li></ul>
<ul><li>The neural basis of learning and cortical plasticity </li></ul>
<ul><li>Memory and its varieties </li></ul>
<ul><li>Language </li></ul>
<ul><li>Modularity of cognition </li></ul>

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. A variety of learning and teaching methods will be used, such as lectures, seminars, small group activities, online learning materials, clinic hours, forums, and directed reading. You will be encouraged to contribute to the module through actively participating in activities and discussion within the class setting. You will have 10 weekly 2-h lectures. In addition, there will be 10 weekly 1-h seminars to allow for group discussions, small group activities, student presentations and for discussion of any question related to the module, its content, and assessment. You will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning and conduct your own independent study of the learning material and resources made available.  
  
You will be asked to prepare a commentary and a poster on topics of your choice, which will require in-depth reading of the relevant literature. You will have the opportunity to take part in formative writing exercises during the lectures or group activities.  
 
Key learning resources will be put on the module website on Moodle.

This module’s contact hours will be delivered using a number of different approaches. As an example, you may have a combination of in-person sessions (i.e. face to face on campus), and/or online synchronous sessions (participants are engaged at the same time online) and online asynchronous guided activities (you need to plan time to engage with these so you are prepared for the in person and synchronous sessions. These may include viewing recorded lectures and/or other online resources, reading materials, undertaking quizzes, completing exercises and chatting on forums.) In addition to these teaching delivery approaches, you will undertake your own independent study, which may involve wider reading, independent research, skills practice and preparation for assessment. Explain and apply cognitive and neural models to understand the basis of human functions such as perception, attention, memory, and language, linking these models to neural correlates.

Evaluate the importance of a scientific approach in studying human brain function, applying this understanding to research and clinical contexts. 

Values and attitudes

Critically assess the evidence supporting brain functions and treatment approaches, analysing their effectiveness and limitations. 

Analyse and critically appraise research in cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology, evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of different methods for inferring the relationship between brain function and cognition. 

Discuss the complexity and the quirks of human brain function. 

Critically evaluate scientific research papers and their relevance in the domain of cognitive neuroscience.  

Evaluate complex arguments and their factual support.  

Appropriately present and discuss (written and oral) research findings. 

Critically evaluate research and key theoretical issues in cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology, including perception, attention, learning, memory, language, and clinical disorders, and assess the research methods used to explore them.
