Indicative content of this module and Fundamental processes in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuropsychology I  
  
This module will cover further fundamental processes in Cognitive Neuroscience and you will engage with some of the following topics:  
<ul><li>Perception including sensory integration, action perception, emotion perception, interoception and embodied cognition  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Attention, its limits and disorders of attention  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Executive function  </li></ul>
<ul><li>The neural basis of learning and cortical plasticity  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Memory and its varieties   </li></ul>
<ul><li>Language </li></ul>
<ul><li>Modularity in cognition   </li></ul>

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. PSM205 - Fundamental Processes in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuropsychology II

A variety of learning and teaching methods will be used, such as lectures, seminars, small group activities, online learning materials, clinic hours, forums, and directed reading. You will be encouraged to contribute to the module through actively participating in activities and discussion within the class setting.  
  
You will have 10 weekly 2-h lectures. In addition, there will be 10 weekly 1-h seminars to allow for group discussions, small group activities, student presentations and for discussion of any question related to the module, its content, and assessment. You will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning and conduct your own independent study of the learning material and resources made available.  
  
You will be asked to prepare and present a brief presentation on a topic of your choice. Depending on class size, these presentations will be prepared and delivered in groups or individually. This exercise will help your understanding of a specific topic, as you will discuss it within a group.  
 
Key learning resources will be put on the module website on Moodle.

This module’s contact hours will be delivered using a number of different approaches. As an example, you may have a combination of in-person sessions (i.e. face to face on campus), and/or online synchronous sessions (participants are engaged at the same time online) and online asynchronous guided activities (you need to plan time to engage with these so you are prepared for the in person and synchronous sessions. These may include viewing recorded lectures and/or other online resources, reading materials, undertaking quizzes, completing exercises and chatting on forums.) In addition to these teaching delivery approaches, you will undertake your own independent study, which may involve wider reading, independent research, skills practice and preparation for assessment. Fundamental Processes in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuropsychology II

Analyse and critically appraise research in cognitive neuroscience, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of different methods for inferring brain function and cognition. 

Knowledge

Critically assess the evidence supporting brain functions and treatment approaches, analysing their effectiveness and limitations in different contexts. 

Values and attitudes

Appropriately present and discuss (written and oral) research findings.  

Skills

Carry out independent web-based and library research. 

Integrate and syntheses information from diverse sources which may be based upon conflicting and/or complementary epistemological frames of reference.  

Discuss the complexity and the quirks of human brain function. 

Critically evaluate research and key theoretical issues in cognitive neuroscience, including perception, attention, learning, memory, language, and related clinical disorders, as well as the research methods used to explore these areas. 

Critically evaluate scientific research papers and their relevance in the domain of cognitive neuroscience.  

Evaluate the importance of a scientific approach to studying human brain function, applying this perspective in both research and clinical contexts. 

Relate neuroanatomical approaches to cognitive functions, evaluating how brain damage impacts cognitive abilities. 

Evaluate complex arguments and their factual support.  

Explain and apply cognitive and neural models to understand human functions such as perception, attention, memory, and language, linking these models to neural correlates.
