The course will consist of 10 X 2-hour sessions (a 1-hour lecture followed by a 1-hour seminar/workshop). In lectures we will explore weekly themes from a critical perspective. In seminars you will participate in structured discussions and complete tasks pertaining to key readings/resources.

Policing 'Race' Through 'Crime'

Assess the perspectives of Black studies, Black intellectual thought, and expressive culture more broadly with respect to ‘race’ and ‘crime’.

Knowledge

Evaluate evidence of racial injustice from an intersectional perspective that does not neglect gender and class inequality.

Skills

Respect your peers, value their work and be conscious of the need to avoid plagiarism.

Values and attitudes

Critically evaluate the colonial history of British policing.

Show respect and tolerance for other people in the module.

Assess agendas that address violence and harm reduction beyond the criminal justice system.

Demonstrate awareness of the ethical and political implications of policing and criminal justice measures in the context of urban violence.

Compare various approaches to violence and harm that depart from standard, mainstream criminological and criminal justice definitions, understandings and responses.

Develop a critical awareness of how ‘crime’ becomes racialised and how ‘blackness’ is policed through racist politics and cultural narratives of law and order.
