You will study the following areas:

Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. APM010 - Advanced Physical Assessment of the Newborn and Infant

You will learn through a variety of methods which include: 
Lead Lectures 
This is a useful method for presenting an overview of new material and will stimulate you to read further around this subject. 
Clinical  
You will spend a minimum of 30 hours  in the clinical area examining babies, and attending any relevant clinical teaching and seminars. This time is required for the completion of your Portfolio Assessment. You must identify a clinical supervisor in practice and have your clinical and academic study time approved before commencing the module. It is the student’s responsibility to find their own NIPE placement and clinical supervisor. The clinical supervisor must be either a NIPE-qualified Midwife with at least one year of experience in conducting NIPE examinations, or a designated medical mentor (neonatal doctor). You will negotiate clinical learning time with your clinical supervisor and other clinical specialists. 
Small group work 
Small group work will encourage you to apply theory to practice and extend the depth and breadth of your knowledge; providing opportunities for debate, exploration of personal thoughts and ideas and practice experiences. 
Personal Tutorials 
Tutorials and reflection on learning with your personal tutor enable your progress to be discussed as well as issues of concern about the programme raised. Tutorials also offer you academic and pastoral support and may be face to face or on line via a virtual learning environment (VLE). 
VLE 
The Moodle module enables a variety of communication options, including  synchronous and asynchronous discussion and reflection.

*Please note the number of hours exceeds the normal calculation, as it includes learning in clinical practice hours. A minimum of 30 hours will be required for the completion of your Portfolio Assessment.

Effectively and sensitively record and communicate findings to parents and relevant professionals  

Demonstrate the ability to practice within a safe and conducive environment when undertaking the physical examination of the new-born and infant. 

Actively advocate on behalf of families to promote equitable access to ongoing care and support. 

Critically evaluate the relationship between antenatal and intrapartum events that may impact on the newborn’s health status and subsequent events that may impact on the infant at birth and at 6-8 weeks. 

Critically facilitate informed decision-making within your own practice and make appropriate referrals to specialists. 

Utilise a holistic, systematic approach to comprehensively examine the newborn and infant.
