Through the close reading of a selected body of texts, which may include poetry, drama, novels, short stories, films and/or television series, you will acquire the ability to identify and analyse various themes related to the textual representation of London. These may include, but are not limited to: 
 
<ul><li>London’s ‘imagined’ geographies  </li></ul>
<ul><li>London as a ‘metropole’ with colonial ‘peripheries’  </li></ul>
<ul><li>Intergenerational tensions </li></ul>
<ul><li>Race and class conflict </li></ul>
<ul><li>Immigration and diaspora </li></ul>
<ul><li>Ideas of ‘home’ and belonging </li></ul>

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. This module will be delivered through a range of teaching and learning activities, including lectures, seminars and guided independent study. Lectures will introduce you to relevant literary, historical and cultural contexts and concepts. Seminars will provide opportunities for applying and articulating your knowledge. Your learning will be supported by study materials on the Virtual Learning Environment.

London after Empire: City and Society

Examine and interpret the major historical and sociological changes that have shaped writing in or about London since the late nineteenth century.

Apply appropriate theoretical and contextual perspectives to the analysis of literature produced in and about London.

Appraise the intersectional nature of race, ethnicity, gender and other axes of difference. 

Employ a diversity of opinion and ideas. 

Evaluate competing explanations or interpretations of London’s role in the British Empire or post-imperial decolonisation. 

 

Analyse the effects of Empire on London and their representation in writing and culture.
