The module will build your knowledge of theories and concepts useful for understanding how states seek to obtain peace and stability, whether it is after a major war or amid a rivalry. You will reflect on existing theories that explain how states signal their intentions, practice coercion, engage in diplomacy, or solve international problems like genocide in concert with other states. To clarify the real-world application of these theories, we will examine a series of historical cases in which at least one concept features prominently. In particular, the module will engage with the existing literature that draws on deterrence theory—the predominant framework in strategic studies that scholars use to understand patterns of peace and conflict.
The module will offer you the opportunity to explore a number of case studies through the thematic sessions and as stand-alone sessions (where a limited number of cases will be studied in depth). These might include, but won't be limited to, the Treaty of Versailles, the early Cold War, and the Rwandan Genocide. The case studies to be studied in depth may vary from year to year.

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. More information on the timing and type of feedback that will be provided for each assessment will be available from the module leader. https://www.citystgeorges.ac.uk/about/governance/policies/student-policies-and-regulations
