This module offers students from a range of disciplines a dynamic introduction to media and communications. By inviting students to critically consider the contemporary media and communications landscape, it fosters deep knowledge of current issues. At the same time, this module develops a suite of transferrable professional skills in oral and visual presentation, digital content creation and creating relevant, tailored communications for different stakeholders. 
 Indicative topics may include:

Feedback is provided in a number of ways throughout your module. This includes feedback you receive during teaching from both peers and lecturers and that provided for formative assessment. Following an assessment, you will be given your marks and feedback in line with the assessment regulations and policy. Taught classes will consist of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. The lectures are a vital and dynamic space for collective, in-depth enquiry into key ideas. The seminars will feature a range of methods including in-class formative quizzes, discussion of ideas, evaluation of contemporary media examples and case studies, and collaborative, creative group-working. The practical workshops will instruct students in key skills of media production and presentation that support the assessment. The seminars and workshops also offer space for students to give and receive feedback on drafts of their assessed work. 
 You are encouraged to undertake extensive reading and contextual research to elaborate your understanding of the topics covered and foster ideas for your assessment. Transferrable professional skills will be developed throughout the module, through class exercises and coursework.  
Key learning and teaching resources will be posted on the module page on Moodle. Self-directed learning hours are for independent study and account for the minimum amount of time you should spend studying independently. This activity may include conducting research, practicing and reflecting on techniques learned in class, reading widely around the subject to develop a deeper understanding, carrying out activities using Moodle, attending induction and career development workshops, working in groups to complete assignments and/or presentations, and completing individual assignments and other homework.
