The module will consist of lectures and seminars. Lectures will focus on giving an overview of a specific topic or theory. Seminars will consist of discussions, debates and detailed commentaries on the weekly topics and readings.

Gender and Society

Presenting controversial arguments accurately and fairly, including those which you as a student do not agree necessarily agree with.

Values and attitudes

Describe how gender intersects with other social divisions such as age and ethnicity.

Knowledge

Evaluate and challenge different perspectives on gender in various different areas of social life e.g. the family, the workplace, the media etc.

Skills

Debate the multiple ways in which social processes and institutions shape gender and gender identities.

Use these theories to interpret and assess empirical materials about changes in gender identification and gendered inequalities in contemporary society.

Analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative research relating to gender inequalities and gender identities.

Evaluate the main theoretical approaches to gender and gender identities.

Apply a number of theoretical perspectives to understand the historical formation and development of gender relations and identities in contemporary Britain.

Recognise and critically assess the extent to which popular knowledge about gender is socially constructed.

Use empirical research to question popular assumptions about gender

Carry out advanced reading and engagement with contemporary theories of gender and gender identities.

Appreciate a diversity of opinion and ideas, not least by exposing students to research from a broad range of theoretical standpoints.

Articulate and discuss one’s own ideas about gender, as well as ideas gained through independent reading, and to express them in interactive seminars and group discussion.
