Self-directed study time accounts for the minimum amount of time you should spend studying independently. For example, carrying out subject research, practising and reflecting on techniques learned in class, reading widely around the subject to develop a deeper understanding.

Contact hours are designed to be flexible and are delivered using a variety of methods to help you learn in the most effective way. A proportion of the core content may be delivered online and additional support materials and content will also be made available through Moodle.

Alternative Risk Transfer (ART) and Risk Securitisation

Apply the theory and skills necessary to critically analyse risk transfer and risk financing related issues. 

Skills

Assess insurance-linked securitisation, a form of ART that allows insurers and reinsurers to gain additional capacity through the capital markets and enables investors to further diversify their portfolios. 

Knowledge

Research relevant sources and materials to address insurance related problems. 

Values and attitudes

Evaluate the growing convergence between the insurance and capital markets and the new solutions for financing risk that have been developed between them. 

Discuss the use of finite and financial reinsurance and insurance derivatives, including catastrophe futures and option and weather derivatives. 

Assess and analyse risk management needs of primary insurers and suggest suitable ART solutions. 

Reflect and critically analyse ART market development. 

Compare and contrast the different types of ART & ILS structures, and assess their suitability for funding and/or transferring different risks. 

Analyse and apply learning from case studies. 

Communicate effectively with non-specialists in the area.
